WoW Source Episode 3, Dev Tweets and BlizzCon 2014

Blizzard released a new WoW Source episode today. WoW Source is their interview / showcase type show where they shed some light on Warlords of Draenor and answer a few community questions. This time they talk about PvP, Ashran and a little about class changes.

It looks like players won’t be able to choose the location of their garrison anymore! The main reason seems to be that garrisons are now much more integrated in the leveling flow. For the horde it will be located in Frostfire Ridge and for the alliance in Shadowmoon Valley. Both their starting zones respectively.

Watcher (Ion Hazzikostas), who was also in the WoW Source episode, announced there will be a lot of information about raiding and the philosophy behind it for WoD next week!

And finally BlizzCon 2014 has been announced!

The Entitlement Culture Within The World (of Warcraft)

Welcome to Mezzy Talks! The editorial where I take an indepth look at something within World of Warcraft culture or game design.

Due to the Easter holidays there won’t be a podcast tonight and there isn’t much in depth stuff to talk about due to the lack of news this week anyway. So while the Easter bunny makes his yearly visit I thought I’d write a piece on something that has bothered me within the culture of WoW in the last few expansions. While the start of this article will go where you might expect it to, at the end I’ll tackle a similar issue in which I think people should get off their high horse! (Surprising right?)

If you feel I overlooked something in the below discussion, feel free to comment and tell me! I’m someone who enjoys the discussion and am always willing to readjust my opinion.

Now if you’re a regular viewer of the podcast you’ll know that I am on the more elitist side of the player base spectrum. I believe that loot and rewards in general should be earned through genuine effort, and not given out freely. Loot should mean something, which as you might agree has not been the case for a while now.

Let’s take a look at history and the general dungeon/raid content that was available for the more casual crowd, starting in The Burning Crusade. In TBC heroic dungeons were first introduced as a harder difficulty setting for all TBC dungeons, which could be done on max lvl(70).

Pax East WoD Interviews

Pax East was this weekend and although there were no official announcements regarding World of Warcraft, some fansites did get to interview a few devs over Warlords of Draenor!

First off, wowhead! You can find the full interview here. But here’s a recap of the most important new information:

  • Garrisons will be integrated into EVERY aspect of Warlords of Draenor
  • You’ll be getting crafting resources from garrisons
  • While adventuring in Draenor you might come across an npc like a quest giver or one in a dungeon that you can impress. If you do so you might get them as a follower in your garrison
  • Your followers will also have gear that you can improve
  • The Iron Horde will attack you Garrison and you’ll have to defend from the invasion!
  • When your followers fail a mission or get defeated by the iron horde their morale and efficiency will decrease until they successfully complete a mission.
  • We’re getting another page of void storage

WoW Insider also had an interview. Although most has been said some new things still came up in the interview here. It is worth mentioning though that in the context of sending your followers in your garrison to kill bosses the following was said:

  • If your team triumphs, they will return to you with loot, which can be either for them or for you. You’ll even be able to watch an animated scene of your followers’ battle.
  • The battles will be scored like challenge modes, with bronze, silver, or gold grades depending on how your followers performed. When you send them out, you can choose the loot you want them to find. A better grade gives them a higher percentage to retrieve the item(s) you wanted.

On the subject of transmog:

  • The Diablo 3 transmog system will not be implemented in WoW. They have “long-term plans” to improve the system.

Afterwards Ion Hazzikostas said on twitter that although nothing will happen in 6.0, they are working on an elegant system.

At your service: Custom UIs [WoW]

Greetings!

This is a whole new author for the site, Jestricide, writing. I am here to bring in some light reading, musing over the everyday things of a WoW gamer. Hope you enjoy the post – don’t hesitate to give me feedback and ask questions in the comments!

These days, most WoW gamers have customized their UIs – some looking for aesthetics, others for improved game play, most for both. It’s usually that one guy in your raid team who uses no addons whatsoever that is the weird one. Though, one cannot claim that you NEED addons to be a good player… … I don’t think I could give them up myself.

So. What is it that we do to our UIs to make them all pretty and handy? Well, first of all, we all start out from this:

The default UI

This is what you see when you log onto the game for the first time, with less abilities of course.

Now, as there are many many single addons for specific uses, that you can combine to make a completely customized UI of your own – and we will get to those later – there are also quite some UI addon packs out there. I.e.. you download an addon, and often all that you will need besides it for the perfect raid layout is a DPS/HPS output meter (Recount, Skada) and raid unit frames, if you dislike the default ones.
